Back to Black - Sustainable Living Inspiration For Every Budget

BACK TO BLACK interior inspo

Because we believe that interior design does not have to be a luxury product, we collect various furniture for home inspiration for every budget. These three interior design collages clearly form a series with the theme "Back to Black," in which vintage design classics and reused furniture in shades of black play the main role. Black in interior design is a story in itself. It is the color that can carry everything - from minimalist to glamorous - and effortlessly elevates any second-hand design piece to the next level. In this series of spaces, I was inspired by the power of contrast. Each piece of furniture here tells its own history, often with roots in the 1970s or earlier, but all with that modern look that still works today.

*I collected the furniture and accessories through trusted vintage design sources (such as Catawiki, Whoppah, and Reliving). But also some items from Martkplaats for home decorating inspiration for every budget. Shop links have been added where possible. But because these are repurposed items, there is no guarantee that they are still available at the time you read this. I try to update this from time to time. So already expired items will be updated with alternative similar products.

Atmosphere: sleek, Italian modernism with graphic contrasts

The first room exudes pure elegance. The leather Soriana bench by Cassina, designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa, is one of those classics that stands the test of time with ease. You can regularly find them second-hand these days, often still in beautiful condition. In addition, the white Laccio Kiga coffee table from Marcel Breuer, a Bauhaus design that fits perfectly with the space's clean lines. The orange Globe floor lamp from Aldo van den Nieuwelaar adds just that touch of warmth that brings the whole thing to life.

The mix of materials - leather, glass and chrome - ensures that black does not feel heavy, but rather fresh and layered.

Atmosphere: elegant retro chic with modernist influences

The second room shows how black doesn't have to be cold. Here is a De Sede sofa, combined with the iconic Eames Lounge Chair by Vitra. The round coffee table in glass and aluminum provides an airy counterpart. In the background is a white medical display cabinet - sleek, functional and always elegant - and the Danish 1970s floor lamp, look-a-like of, Panthella Lamp by Verner Panton provides that soft, diffused light that enhances any interior.

Atmosphere: homier, with chrome and geometric retro influences

The third and final space feels more homey, with warm materials and lots of chrome. The low leather sofas of De Sede or Leolux are the protagonists here, second-hand often still in perfect condition thanks to the quality of the leather. The String-wall rack behind the sofa is typically Scandinavian: airy, functional and timeless. Together with a vintage Componibili-cabinet by Kartell and a chrome-colored Space Age floor lamp, it forms an interior that feels like a mix between a modern apartment and a 1970s movie set.
